New material
Cataloguing of a new material is done from Catalogue > Cataloguing > New material, and can be carried out in 4 different ways.
Import bibliographic records from file
Bibliographic records can be imported by uploading a file with MARC21 data of type MRC or MARCXML.
- Click "Create manifestation" and select "Import from file..."
- Select a source (this can optionally be omitted)
- Select a file of type MRC or MARCXML

Auto-created manifestations based on orders
If Cicero has an integration with the supplier of the material, orders for new materials will automatically be created as a manifestation in Cicero with the status "Draft". The most basic information will automatically be filled in on the manifestation based on bibliographic record data from the supplier. All manifestations with the status "Draft" will appear in the "Manifestations ready for cataloguing" table. To start the cataloguing, simply click a manifestation in the table, which opens the manifestation on the tab for creating Relations between work, expression and manifestation.
If you do not wish to enrich the manifestation with further information than what has already been added automatically, you can select the desired manifestations on the left side of the table, and then choose "Mark as handled". This will change the status of the selected manifestations to "Published", and they will then no longer appear in the table.
TIP! If some existing manifestations need to be updated, it is possible to change their status to "Draft". They will then appear in the "Materials ready for cataloguing" table together with newly purchased materials, and can be handled when convenient.
Scan barcode on material
If you have a physical copy of the material that you wish to catalogue, you can scan the material's barcode (e.g. ISBN) in the "Scan barcode" field.
- If the scanned barcode belongs to a known manifestation in Cicero, that manifestation opens on the tab for creating Relations between work, expression and manifestation. If the manifestation already has a relation to an expression, you are taken to the manifestation's detail page, as described under Create & edit work, expression and manifestation.
- If the scanned barcode is unknown to Cicero, the cataloguing process begins with a search in External sources for bibliographic records with that barcode, which can then form the framework for cataloguing a new material.
TIP! The Scan barcode function is not related to the "Materials ready for cataloguing" table, and can therefore be used to open a manifestation regardless of which status the manifestation has.
Create manually/via search in external sources
If none of the above 2 options can be used, you can click "Create manifestation" to start the cataloguing of a new material. This begins the cataloguing flow with the option of searching in External sources.
